Peace

PEACE

When I was young.

            Our neighborhood where I grew up was full of kids who played baseball, swam and played hide and go seek together all summer long. Many of us are still in contact with each other after more than 60 years. One day we were walking down the alley way between houses, and we were attacked by another group of kids with rocks. Soon the war had begun with both sides slinging rocks at each other with the intent of hurting the enemy. It was war. We were just over 20 years from the end of World War II, and the Vietnam war was heating up. War was in the news and us kids learned war in the alley between our homes. I was hit by a rock on my right foot and earned my first neighborhood kid’s purple heart. We were learning about war from our society and not learning peace.

            Peace is what Jesus is all about. Yet our world is full of war. Protestors fill the streets and shout for peace, yet war comes anyway. People are saying, “Peace, peace! When there is no peace.” (Jere. 6:14 b [NKJV]). What we read about and witness on live TV today is exactly what Jesus said, “you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.” (MT. 24:6-7). There is no peace in this world. Nations are rising against nation and kingdoms eye each other with suspicion and fear. From the time we are small to the end of our lives in this world we learn about war.

            Now that I am old.

            The sun was setting behind the mountains, and the shadows were growing across the long spring grassy field. The sheep were peacefully grazing without any care of war, and their newborn lambs were jumping and playing in the grass. As I sat on a bale of hay and watched over my little flock of sheep I thought of Isaiah 11:6, “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them.” A future description of a wonderful time of peace. The air was calm and cool; the birds were singing their springtime melodies when two baby lambs came over and crawled up onto my lap. They had come to their shepherd for rest. As they began to doze off the mama ewe came over and stood next to me, her shepherd. Soon she put her head on my shoulder and quietly soaked in the peace of having the shepherd being so close and comforting. It was peace offered by the shepherd. Now that I am old, I thrive on peace and not throwing rocks at other kids who lived down the street. Peace, peace and yes, it was peaceful to hold the lambs and comfort the mama ewe.

            Our future.

            A time is coming when true peace will fill this world. The shepherd’s peace of Jesus, our shepherd will end war and bring peace to this war-torn world we live in. When Jesus was born the shout went out, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Lue 2:1). Jesus is our Shepherd and He yearns for us to crawl to Him so He can guard us, His flock. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11). As a shepherd I know my sheep and they know me. How well do we know Jesus? “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep and am known by My own.” (John 10:14). I know the voice of my sheep and they know my voice. (John 10:3). When I call them by name, they lift their heads from grazing and one by one when I call their name they Baah at me. I bring peace to my flock and Jesus will bring peace to all the world. A time is coming when war will be no more and true peace will fill the earth.

            Jesus is coming and the world will change from war to peace. Implements of war will be turned to implements of peaceful farming (Mic. 4:2); The deserts will bloom; the weak will be strengthened; the blind will see and the deaf will hear; the lame will leap like a deer (or my lambs); there will be no more hunger, disease or natural disasters. War will be no more. Peace will cover the world. (Isa. 35- A chapter worth reading).

            Peace will come to this world. Do not lose hope. Do not give up for the day is coming when we can recite the Psalm of David with the full assurance that our great Shepherd, Jesus will be watching over us. A time is coming when kids will not throw rocks at each other. A time is coming when we can sit with our Lord and Savior Jesus in peace.

The Lord the Shepherd of His People

A Psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.”
