The war in Europe had been intensely fought for five years. Several millions of people had lost their lives; whole cities and their homes had been laid waste. Soon the world would learn about the holocaust and the six million Jews who had been tortured and murdered in the most inhumane of ways. The Western allies were preparing their assault on Europe; we know it as “D-Day”. The German troops waiting in France and all along the coastline were formidable and ready for the cross-channel assault. The allies needed to find an edge, a way to deceive the Germans so they could have a better chance of a successful D-Day landing.
Who better to deceive the enemy than to hire a “B” rated unknown Australian actor to play the doppelganger part of British General Bernard Montgomery? Long before the concept of artificial intelligence (A.I.) was conceived, the British used an actor, make up and some machismo to fake out the enemy. Meyrick Edward Clifton James was thrust into the middle of World War II and asked to play British General Montgomery (Known as Monty) to fake out the enemy. Make no mistake, General Montgomery was on the German hit list.
This “acting” job by Meyrick James was extremely dangerous, he could be captured, tortured or killed, but if the plan worked it would potentially save thousands of lives and help the allies defeat Germany. D-Day was approaching and the Germans needed to know where “Monty” was. They knew he would be leading the ground forces in the attack on Europe. To know where Monty was would enable the German High Command to be able to track the allies war plans. The new “fake” Monty was given Winston Churchill’s private plane and flown to the Rock of Gibraltar where the British knew the Germans had a spy in the Spanish embassy. The plan was to have the German spy see the artificially created false “Monty” and report his location to the German command. Meyrick James, the fake Monty immediately left Gibraltar for Algiers. The fake out worked flawlessly. Within 20 minutes of the spy dining with the artificially created fake Monty, the spy phoned in his report to Germany, Monty was in Gibraltar and on his way to Africa. The fake was a success; the Germans did not believe the June 6, 1944, D-Day landings were close because “Monty” was far away. Fake outs and deception are an integral part of warfare. This was one of the greatest, most important acting jobs in all history. Australian actor, Meyrick Edward Clifton James is a hero who never won an Oscar or an Academy award.
Military fake outs of the past are nothing compared to our modern Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) abilities to confuse the enemy or make the people believe a lie. Artificial intelligence is being used to manipulate and make a lie look like a fact in courtrooms, TV news, personal videos and in war. Very soon after Russia invaded Ukraine a video was put out supposedly of Ukrainian President Zelinski telling his troops to surrender to Russia as there was no hope of victory. It was Russian misinformation using an early form of A.I. Disinformation was often used in the Bible in wartimes. Jael misled Sisera about being peaceful before she drove a spike through his head and nailed him to the ground. (Judges 4:17-22). Gideon and his 300 went to war against the Midianites. 300 soldiers with candles in containers and trumpets blew their horns and showed their candles while surrounding the large Midianite army around 3 A.M. The Midianites were confused, shocked and so frightened that they set their swords against each other. This was one of the all-time great military fake outs. (Judges 7:20-22).
I have been nicknamed “No tech Mike” by a very “techy” friend for the obvious reason, I am low tech. The concept and abilities of today’s A.I. are evident, even to “No tech Mike.” I know of ChatGPT, altered videos, legal suits against pornography companies artificially inserting unsuspecting people into their movies. There have already been faked news reports, faked courtroom legal briefs and just this week I heard of an estranged wife playing a faked A.I. generated recording of her husband to a judge in court during a custody hearing about hurting their children.
Today, we are at the cusp of deception like never before seen in the history of mankind. People’s words, bodies, actions and beliefs can be artificially changed. Think about reading books online? Has it been artificially updated to being “politically correct”? What would Clark Gable say today in Gone with the Wind? “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a care”? Such a simple change from the original language, yet so easily deceptive and dangerous. What about electronic Bibles? Yes, they can be manipulated too.
God was quite blunt about honesty when He said, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” (Ex. 20:16 [NKJV]). But wait, there is more…
Rev. 12:9 “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” It is quite possible that altered deep fake A.I. videos could/would be a part of this great deception. Lucifer is deceiving the ENTIRE world. But wait, there is more…
Rev. 13:11-17 The beast “performs great signs”. It is easy to enhance great signs and miracles if you can use A.I. altered fake video footage. “He deceives those who dwell on earth…” “No one may buy or sell”. I believe these are real literal events which will happen in the future. Are we closer to the future than we think? It seems A.I. generated deep fake videos could easily enhance the beast power.
What do we do about A.I. in our daily life? Should we go completely “off grid,” hide our heads in the sand and just ignore it? Or do we preach the gospel (Matt. 28:19-20), and endure to the end? (Matt. 24:13-14) “But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” No matter the circumstances, we have a job to do; preach the gospel of the Kingdom of God. Jesus sent out His disciples (We too are His disciples) like sheep amid wolves. “Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues…’ (Matt. 10:16-17). This is a warning for us today too. We must be wise in our dealings with men KNOWING they are using A.I. to lie to and deceive this world. We must be harmless as doves in our preaching of the gospel.
How do we combat the deception of Satan and the deep fake state? John 17:17 “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” We use God’s truth and nothing but the truth! Amen!
The time is coming and is here now when we must be “wise as serpents” concerning what we watch and allow into our homes and minds. A.I. generated videos are now so common that they are accepted as real. Try watching short videos on your Face Book account. They look so real, but many are not. If it does not seem possible it is likely A.I. If it is possible there is a good chance A.I. was used to make it look more believable.
We have a job to do, and it will continue to get more difficult. Deep fake A.I. will make our job of spreading the Word of God, the gospel of God’s Kingdom more difficult. But Jesus will win in the end. Rev. 21:6-8 “And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Jesus wins in the end. We are on His team; therefore, we will win this battle. Stay alert, be aware, remember Satan comes as a roaring lion and an angel of light (I Pet. 5:8; II Cor. 11:14). Test the spirits, do not believe everything we see and hear (I John 4:1) as A.I. generated false facts are real. What we see and hear MUST totally agree with God’s written word, the Bible for it to be true.
Our victory over deep fake A.I. will come from relying on God in faith and we must remember His Word is truth. John 17:17, “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” To overcome deep fake A.I. we use God’s truth and nothing but the truth! Amen!
