Wednesday Bible Blurb “The Wonders of Creation” 12 25 2024

Since the time I was a little child, I wanted to build a train set. Not any old train set but one with mountains, lakes, trees and animals which would show nature and beauty. When the opportunity came to begin to plan and build my train set, I had no idea it would take me a full seven years to finish it. Along the way I had starts and stops, missteps and wonderful success as I designed and built my six feet by eight-foot train set. I used Styrofoam to build mountains and lakes, different types of paint and water effects. I purchased hundreds of miniatures (H O scale), trees, animals and people to put into my creation. Hours and hours were spent, late into the night creating, building and solving logistical issues. Sometimes I would finish and see my mistakes and I would have to rip out what I had built and start that section over.

Creating a miniature scale train set is a wonderful pastime which God has given us the ability to do. It takes imagination, effort, energy, time (Seven years in this case) and the willingness to stop and think about what one is building. I had a theme of high granite style snow covered peaks and lower worn-down hills with lakes and rivers full of animals in the valley between. I built tunnels and bridges for the train and for the slot car track. When finally completed I was able to sit back and smile, I had created a little world of my own and it was good.

During my train set creation years I made errors and had to fix them. I used already available materials created by God to build and mold my train set. Not so with God as He does not make mistakes, nor did He have any previously created materials to create the universe. Let’s take a look at what God has to say about His wonderful creation.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without him nothing was made that was made.” (John 1:1-3 [NKJV]). God made everything from nothing by just speaking His Word (Psalms 33:6-9). What power, majesty and glory we have in our creator who only had to “speak” for creation to happen.

We read of the creation story in Genesis chapter one. After six days of creating the universe and our world full of animals, flora and living things by speaking His Word, God simply pronounced, “…that it was good.” (Gen. 1:25b).  What God did in six days was far more wonderful than my seven years of building a train set. His creation was so beautiful that we are told, “…the morning stars [angels] sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” (Job 38:7). His creation is wonderful.

At night we can go outside and look up into the sky and clearly see His vast power and awesome creation. Stars too innumerable to count, a shining full moon declares the glory of His heavens and gives us light for us to behold. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” (Rom. 1:20). His creation is so overwhelmingly plain to see that we have no excuse to not believe in Him as creator of this vast physical universe and the planet earth we call home.

Why did God create such a vast and wonderful universe? Let us start to look at the real reason for His creation. “O LORD, our LORD, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens! …What is man that You are mindful of Him and the son of man that You visit him?” (Psalms 8:1,4). God made man! “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” (Psalms 139:13-14). God made us and we should praise Him for His creation.

His massive and wonderful work of creation was for us, His children. He is bringing us into His family. “For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.” (Rom. 8:20-23). Mankind is to be His ultimate creation by bringing us into His family.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” (Rom. 8:14-17). God created us to be a part of His family.

My train set is nothing in comparison to what God has created in mankind. I enjoyed my late evenings of creative work over those long seven years. God took six days to make the universe and all that is in it. He is taking His time to bring us into His family. There is no better creator than our God who loves us and wants us to be with Him for all eternity. Praise our creator God almighty!
