Wednesday Bible Blurb The Universe 3 27 2024
Growing up in the city of Los Angeles the prospect of seeing stars at night was slim. Smog, ambient lights from the city and haze made it so I was lucky to see two or three stars at night. In Montana, on dark moonless nights the sky reveals a myriad of stars we call the “Milky Way.” Getting some lawn chairs and a warm blanket one can lay back and look up into the brilliance of God’s magnificent creation. In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s my dad and I would lay out side and watch the night sky at our place in Montana. We would get so excited if we were to see a satellite streak across the dark star lit sky. Now one can see satellites all night long and even the International Space Station can be seen at night. A quick google search netted me the following information: there are estimates of the existence of up to two trillion separate galaxies with an average of 100 billion stars per galaxy. Overall, the current best estimates show there are about 200 billion trillion stars.
How BIG is God? We will start at the historical beginning of time to find out how BIG our God truly is. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:1-4 [NKJV]). Jesus, our savior, who died for our sins made the two trillion galaxies and the 200 billion trillion stars. He made it all and nothing was made without Him and He gives us light. God is really BIG.
Getting outside to star gaze and look up at the creation God gave us can and should give us a glimpse as to the power and majesty of our mighty God. His awesome creation is so plain and self-evident of His glory and power that no one should be able to deny Him. Sadly, many do not believe God is even alive. Many believe in the satanic theory of evolution where nothing created everything. Evolution is a belief so absurd as to defy logic at all levels. We are so blessed to know the mystery of the universe, God created everything to give us His life. Creation demands a creator!
Paul discusses this very subject. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, [Evolution] they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.” The truth of God and His eternal creative existence is self-manifested in His universal creation.
Job was having a rough time and after many days God Himself came and spoke with him. How BIG is our God? He showed Job how little man is in comparison just by asking some pertinent questions. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid it cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4-7). 200 billion trillion stars. “Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the belt of Orion? Can you bring out Mazzaroth in its season? Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth? (Job 38:31-33). Our God is a very big God! He has plainly set before us His creation as an example of His power and greatness. We cannot deny Him and we must obey Him.
Take some time and go outside on a warm summer night to see God’s magnificent creation. Take the kids, a few blankets and some warm drinks. Lay down on a grassy field on a dark night and look up and see what God has done.
