Spiritual Passover Preparation

Jesus was giving them spiritual instruction, His laws and mindset upon their heart not just in their minds.

Wednesday Bible Blurb Spiritual Passover Preparation 3 25 2026

The yearly Passover should be the most deeply felt and spiritually enriching season of the year for Christians. How much do we truly love God and His son Jesus?

Matthew 26:26-28 [NKJV]. “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

We start out with the most basic and fundamental understanding of the New Covenant Passover/Lord’s Supper (Paul called it the “Lord’s supper in I Cor. 11:20). It is a spiritual experience reminding us we are under the New Covenant, and our sins are forgiven by the sacrifice of Jesus our Savior. We should be examining ourselves and partaking of the yearly Passover/Lord’s Supper in a spiritual mindset, not a physical mindset.

  1. Jesus gives an Update.

Jesus came and He corrected the errors of the people by showing them the true meaning of His God given commandments. From His sermon on the mount:

Matt. 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’”

Matt. 5:27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’”

Matt. 5:33 Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’”

Matt. 5:38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’”

Matt. 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’”

Jesus was introducing them to the spiritual aspect of the coming New Covenant and His way of life “You have heard” refers to the Old Covenant and He is showing them the New Covenant update to come after His death and resurrection. Once imbued with the Holy Spirit they would begin to understand God and Jesus in a spiritual nature rather than a physical nature.

Heb. 8:7-10 “For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”

Jesus was giving them spiritual instruction, His laws and mindset upon their heart not just in their minds. This applies to us today as we have repented of our sins (Jesus came for the remission of sins), been baptized (washed from sin) and had the laying on of hands (Given the Holy Spirit). We are to live with His mind and heart within us, and we are to give ALL to Him.

Matt. 22:37-40 “Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Our Christian journey is spiritual, and we need to think spiritually. When we participate in Passover/Lord’s Supper it is to be a spiritual experience.

2) New Covenant Spiritual Passover/Lord’s Supper

I Cor. 11:28 “But let a man examine himself and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” This is a spiritual examination of oneself.

Examine Strong’s 1381 (GR) dokimazo, “to test, try, examine; interpret: -prove proved, approve…” We are to be spiritually looking at ourselves as we prepare for the Passover. Are we holding to the standards of Jesus? Answer: Rom 3:23 “For all have sinned…” Jesus came for the “remission” of our sins.

I Cor. 11:29 “For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” Be truthful with yourself on your private spiritual self-examination.

Two views of our spirituality:

The Negative sinful spiritual view:

Gal. 5:19-21: “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

If our lives are full of the negative sinful spiritual view above, we are not walking in the Spirit and are not worthy of the Passover. This is called examining ourselves.

The Positive spiritual view:

Gal. 5:22-25 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

If our lives are full of the above Spirit filled life, then we are walking with God and are worthy to take the Passover. This is called examining ourselves.

Fortunately, we are saved by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8).

Jesus wants us to be with Him. On His last night of life, He made it abundantly clear as to what He wants for us.

Luke 22:19 “And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” He wants all of us to be with Him to do as He did and to remember Him by partaking of His spiritual Passover.

John 17:11 In His Passover prayer with the disciples Jesus clearly stated His goal for us. “Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. What could be better than being one with God?

Jesus wants us to be one with Him and the Father. This is the deepest spiritual meaning of the Passover service. It is about becoming one with God and Jesus. This is worth taking the time for us to deeply spiritually examine ourselves and to make sure we are walking with Jesus in every step we take.
