Wednesday Bible Blurb “Imitate God” 2 12 2025
The little boy was sitting on the floor watching a football game on T.V. with his dad. What the dad did not know was his little boy was watching dad more than the T.V. Soon dad crossed his arms. The little boy noticed this and crossed his little arms. Dad crossed his legs, so the little boy crossed his legs. It did not take long for the dad to realize his little son was doing everything he was doing. Children learn from their parents and imitation is an example of children watching their parents and learning how to live. Our precious children learn how to live from us. Are we the example we should be as they grow up?
We are the children of God and He gave us a perfect example of how to live in the Life of Jesus. Are we humble and childlike enough to do imitate the life of Jesus and the lives of those He sent to teach us? “Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.’” (Matt. 18:3-5 [NKJV]). Are we childlike enough to imitate our Father in heaven?
A question for some deep thinking. Have you ever disappointed your parents? When you found out your parents were disappointed in some action you took, how did you feel? When I was very young (around age eight), my dad told me NOT to eat an Oreo cookie before dinner. I told my dad I would not eat the cookie. I ate the cookie anyhow. He noticed the nice cookie crumbs in my teeth, and I was properly scolded. To this day I feel bad about letting my dad down and not following him and not doing what he had instructed me to do- don’t eat the chocolate cream filled yummy cookie. How do we think God feels when we don’t imitate Him and do what He has commanded us? Do we feel bad that we let our Dad in heaven down? I hope we do.
It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Twice in his letter to the Corinthians Paul instructs them to “imitate” him. “Therefore, I urge you, imitate me.” (I Cor. 4:6) Then again, he says, “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.” (I Cor 11:1). God has given prophets and apostles and leaders to His Church to lead us to salvation. We are to imitate Christ and God gives us leaders to help us along the way.
The little boy continued to watch TV with his dad. Since dad had noticed the little imitator sitting on the floor, dad began to cheer at the football game. The boy cheered. Dad groaned after a bad play. The little boy groaned. Dad ate some chips, so the little boy ate chips too. The little boy only wanted to be like his daddy. Do we want to be like our daddy in heaven? Paul tells us, “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” (Eph. 5:1-2).
Be imitators of Jesus.
