Eager Beaver
Walking along the rippling Montana creek I came across a beaver stick. Somewhere upstream a beaver had chewed on a piece of pine tree and left it to float downstream. Years ago, when I was the 4H leader I used to give out an annual “Eager Beaver” award to a 4H kid who exemplified eagerness. The award was based solely on my observations and judgement of the kids as to who was the most eager to accomplish their yearly goals. As I strolled along the creek I thought about the “Eager Beaver” award and how we, as God’s called out ones should also be an eager beaver for His kingdom work. Each year the 4H kids would anticipate the award.
As we read through the Bible, we find many who were eager to serve God.
-Peter cut off the high priest’s servant’s ear. (John 18:10-11). Peter’s eagerness needed some temperance.
-Paul eagerly taught and laid the theological foundations for Christianity. Peter, after putting his sword away years earlier, commented on how Paul taught the difficult things of scripture. (II Peter 3:14-16). Paul’s eagerness to explain the Word of God was remarkable.
-John as a very old man eagerly and forcefully taught grace, love and law keeping. (Read John I, II, II). John had lived a long life in service to Jesus and now he wanted to tell what the most important aspects of living Christian was. He was eager to tell of grace, love and keeping the ten commandments
How eager are we to preach the gospel? What did Jesus say about it? “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33 [NKJV]). Are we eagerly seeking His way of life first in our lives? Jesus, with all authority spoke to the apostles and told them, “Go therefore and make disciple of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…” (Matt. 28:18-20). Are we eagerly participating in the preaching of the gospel of the coming kingdom of God?
God’s promise to us is that He will adopt us into His family. We are His children, sons and daughters, awaiting our transformation into His spirit filled eternal life. In fact, “…we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Sprit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.” (Rom. 8:22-23). God is giving the spiritual “Eager Beaver” award to ALL who love and obey Him.
As I walked along the creek and thought back to my years as a 4H leader I smiled remembering the joy on the face of the young person who received the “Eager Beaver” award. As we look forward to His coming kingdom and our impending adoption into His eternal spirit family, may we all have the joy on our face of a little child receiving the “Eager Beaver” award.
