Truth

“What is the truth to me may not be the truth to you. My truth is as good as your truth.”

Wednesday Bible Blurb “Truth” 7 10 2024

It was a conversation to confound the mind of mankind. I was deep into a discussion with a social worker/counselor about society today. Her job is to talk to people and “counsel” them to improve themselves and overcome their habits which are negatively affecting their (and others) lives. What I was hearing from this paid counselor was causing me great concern about the future of our society. I asked her if she was allowed to tell someone if their actions were right or wrong, good or bad? Her answer was a profound, “no.” I then asked, “what is right and what is wrong?” Her answer was very simple, “One gets to choose their own right and wrong. If someone believes it is right, then it is right.” I asked what standard is to be used to decide right from wrong and she said, “your own.”

Mother Eve would be proud!! It was Eve who was the first human to decide what is right and what is wrong. “So, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that is was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.” (Gen. 3:6a [NKJV]). Eve created her own truth and decided for herself what was right and what was wrong. She used her own standards to decide good from evil.  This one decision by Mother Eve has caused all mankind to suffer. It is not up to us, the children of Eve to decide right from wrong. God sets the standards of good and evil, right from wrong and we are to follow His lead and do what He says to do. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked;” (Jere. 17:9). Without God and His TRUTH we cannot make good life decisions.

Not long after this conversation I overheard some folks talking about “truth.” One person said, “What is the truth to me may not be the truth to you. My truth is as good as your truth.” This sounded like psycho mumbo jumbo to me and showed man’s standards of right and wrong on full display. Mother Eve would be proud. So, what then is “truth”? Jesus, the Word of God answers this profound question for us. “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17). God’s Words are truth. Everything else is false.

When we think of God’s word we think of the Bible, as we should. Paul tells us, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (II Tim. 3:16).  God’s word explicitly tells us what is right and what is wrong and instructs us in His “righteousness.” If only the counselors of this world new right from wrong and could impart this to their patients. They would no longer have to guess if something is good or evil, right or wrong.

When Jesus said, the Word of God is truth, what was He referring to? Jesus Himself is the Word of God-He was referring to the written word of God and to Himself. Jesus inspired the Holy Bible and He wrote it through humans He called for this purpose. Notice, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1). Jesus is the Word. The Holy Bible is the Words of Jesus and the Bible as inspired by Jesus (The Word), is the only truth. To understand what is right and wrong, evil or good, to have proper discernment…to have truth we must be in alignment with Jesus and His Words.

Jesus, our Savior puts an exclamation point on truth when He says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…” (John 14:6a). He informs us as to what is right and what is wrong. What is the truth to Him must be our truth. His truth is better than our truth. Let us all look to Jesus through His Words in the Bible and follow His truth.
